The next show for the Midcoast Chapter is in scenic Damariscotta!

The Midcoast Chapter of the Union of Maine Visual Artists presents “Waterways,” a dynamic curated collection of artworks celebrating water at the Central Lincoln County YMCA, 525 Main St., Damariscotta, from July 15th to Sept 15th, 2023. An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, July 22nd, from 2 to 4 pm. The event is free and open to the public, and all art is available for sale, unless marked NFS.

The exhibit, juried by Matthew Barter of the Barter Art House Gallery, includes representational waterscapes with a twist; fantasy marine creatures; crashing waves, prayers for rain, buried treasure, and more. This show will delight art lovers, nature enthusiasts, and daydreamers who wonder what lies at the bottom of the ocean.

Barter's oil paintings and sculptures often depict the working harbors of Maine. Barter lives and paints in Brunswick. As a teenager, he studied with his father, Philip Barter, working in his studio in Sullivan, Maine where he learned the mechanics of oil painting. He also worked at a young age on various commercial fishing and lobster boats, as well as mussel harvesting, which shaped his artistic style and focus. Barter's work can be seen at The Barter Art House Gallery, The Courthouse Gallery, and The Portland Art Gallery.

Hi... welcome to the page for the Midcoast Chapter of the UMVA serving artists in the Midcoast Maine area. The Midcoast Chapter of UMVA came together after a meeting exploring options for artists sharing the task of driving down to the Portland Gallery and picking up work for their neighbors.

As Liv Kristin Robinson, Sally Stanton, Ann Tracy and Deb Vendetti met to talk about taking turns bringing work to Portland, they wondered if enough UMVA members in the Midcoast area would want to form their own chapter. An internet survey showed there was great interest and the chapter began to take shape.

In addition to their inaugural show at the Camden Public Library, the January show at Waterfall Arts in Belfast, and possible shows in Blue Hill, Waldoboro and Damariscotta later in 2023, we are always looking for venues to showcase the artists of the Midcoast region.

Meetings for members are held every two months via zoom and possibly in person as the year progresses. There are also Facebook groups for the Chapter - including a community page where members are encouraged to post their shows and news.

Maine’s Coastal Islands Engage Midcoast UMVA Artists

The Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA) - Midcoast Chapter, in partnership with the Friends of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge in Rockland, presents “REFUGE”, a dynamic exhibition of artwork inspired by the unique beauty found in and around Maine’s coastal islands . The exhibit opens with an artists’ reception on September 27th from 5 to 7 pm at the gallery at the Visitor’s Center, 9 Water St., Rockland, ME. The gallery is open during the Visitor Center’s open hours from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The exhibit continues to Dec 13, 2024. "Pemiquid Parkbellhouse" by Bernadette de Cesare Contemporary realist painter Jane Dahmen juried this exhibit which features both representational and abstract works. Sheltered in Place - a Pandemic Art Show

The Covid pandemic reshapes our lives. It continues to strip down our existence, separating us from loved ones and exposing weaknesses in our system of governance and our political leadership. It demonstrates the devastating impact of the nation's grave social injustices. Systemic racism and socioeconomic disparity put oppressed peoples at greater risk for Covid-19. Then, on May 25, as many of us bunkered inside our homes, we witnessed the cold-blooded murder of George Floyd. This videotaped tragedy and the eruption of Black Lives Matter protests across the nation revealed the depth and breadth of racism in America. It is a contagion every bit as present and virulent as the coronavirus. In the face of both existential challenges – pandemic and racism – we can only recover through radical social change.
